Through every stage of my pregnancy and motherhood journey, I’ve doubted myself. I have questioned whether I can do it. Before having kids, I saw other pregnant women, and wondered if I could cope with the nausea, the tiredness, the body changes, the weight of carrying a child. But then I did it. I saw women with newborns, and wondered how they coped with so little sleep, how they juggled a baby and work, how they were able to consistently respond to a little persons cries. And then I did it. I saw women pregnant with their second child, running around after a toddler, and I wondered how they did it. I saw those same women have their baby, transition into motherhood caring for a newborn and their toddler... and still I wondered how on earth they did it. And here I am... bloody doing it! ⠀⠀ Why on earth did I keep questioning myself, and doubting myself and wondering if I would cope? Time and time again, I have surprised myself and totally rocked! The reason I do what I do! ✨

Today I yelled at my toddler. Like really yelled. Loud. And afterwards, I felt so guilty. She was acting out, and really pushing my buttons, and I was tired and trying to do three things at the same time. I shouldn’t have yelled. I felt so guilty and felt like a horrible mum. But I reminded myself that we all stuff up sometimes, and rather than beat myself up about it... I chose to be kind to myself. I recognized I did the wrong thing, I took a few deep breaths to calm down, and then I went and apologized to my daughter. And you know what, she forgave me because our kids love us unconditionally. I repaired our relationship. I aim to learn from this experience, to remind myself that it’s my job to stay calm and model appropriate behaviors to her. Next time, I will try and take the deep breaths BEFORE I yell, rather than after I yell. One of our babies primary needs is to feel safe, secure and loved! I know as new mums, we are given so much advice and often feel judged by others. We’re told that we are holding our baby too much, that we should let them ‘cry it out’, that we’re creating ‘bad habits’. No. We are ensuring our baby feels safe, secure and loved. And if that means we cuddle our baby all day long, I say bring on the cuddles. #thefourthtrimester #postnatalwellbeing #secureattachment #melbournepsychologist

Being a new mum is hard... but you know what makes it so much easier? Lowering your unrealistically high expectations of yourself! I’ve had new mums say to me, “I feel like I’m failing because all I’ve done today is look after my baby”. THAT IS TOTALLY FINE! In fact, you deserve a pat on the back, or maybe even a little medal. ⠀⠀ This is generally what my daily to-do list looks like (in the fourth trimester): ⠀⠀ - Have a shower & get dressed - Enjoy a hot coffee - Make my bed - Feed the baby, change the baby, bath the baby, etc. - Complete one household task - Cook dinner ⠀⠀ And you know what, sometimes I don’t even get all that done. And that’s ok. I set small, achievable goals each day... and then I feel good when I tick them off my list and I gain a sense of achievement!
